S-II 1.25-inch filter uses the property of the so-called emission mist. Those objects glow in specific colors, the so-called emission lines. The emission lines are linked to "ionized sulfur." This filter only lets through the emission lines of the ionized sulfur at 672 nm yet blocks all colors (and thus almost all artificial light). The effect is impressive: Suddenly, fog becomes visible in places that appear empty without a filter. When the sky is slightly brightened, many planetary nebulae, emission nebulae, and supernova remnants are seen completely problem-free when using this filter. This is a must for every amateur astrophotography and visual astronomer.
